VEVAY TWP - Crews have righted a tanker truck filled with a tar-like substance that has closed down US-127 in both directions Monday. Ingham Coiunty Sheriff's Office says the driver, a 60-year-old man, from Macomb County, likely fell asleep causing the accident in the early morning hours. About 8,500 gallons of a liquid asphalt product, CRPE, was spilled. Specialty workers will be on the scene to remove the matieral from the road and the median.

At last word this work was expected to last through the day and into Tuesday. Drivers who normally travel US 127 south of Mason and north of Leslie should avoid the area. Traffic is being diverted off US-127 to a nearby service road, Hull Road, but that is slow going.

The driver of the truck suffered a minor injury and was treated and released from the hospital.
