West Avenue Bridge Now Open to Traffic
The M-50/West Avenue bridge in Jackson, between Wildwood Avenue and Ganson Street, is now open to traffic - two weeks ahead of schedule. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) closed the bridge in early April for reconstruction. It was originally scheduled to be open at the end of August.
Improvements included replacing the bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and improving the sight distance on the bridge, adding a continuous center left-turn lane on West Avenue, and traffic signal upgrades.
Work will continue on the project into the fall, with intermittent, short-term lane closures and a traffic shift needed on West Avenue to complete the project. In addition, construction of a cul-de-sac at Oakhill Drive at West Avenue is expected to begin shortly.
The early opening is welcome news for local residents and motorists, along with visitors attending race events at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) the weekend of Aug. 17.
