Update: Woman and Son Found Dead Identified
The mother and son who were found dead in Meridian Township over the weekend have been identified.
31-year-old Caylen Mae Ottensman and her 6-month-old son Cian Hoyt Ottensman were found after Caylen's father called police and reported the two missing.
The family released this statement: “This was an accidental death and a tragic accident. We ask for love and compassion for all in our community who struggle with the challenges of bipolar disorder.”
Police are deeming this a tragic accident, and believe that Ottensman lost consciousness, fell, and accidentally smothered her son. The cause of death has yet to be determined.
Meridian Township police officers were called to the 1700 block of Pine Creek Circle near Lake Lansing, Saturday, after residents could not find their daughter and her son.
"The resident reported that two occupants of their home, being their daughter and her son...were missing," said Lt. Greg Frenger of Meridian Township police.
The parents had not spoken to their daughter since around noon that day and because both are blind, they could not find her.
However, when police arrived on scene, they found the 31-year-old woman unconscious in a basement bedroom and on top of her six-month-old son.
"It appears that the mother lost consciousness and collapsed and fell onto the child and both of them died," said Frenger. "It appears to be a very tragic accident."
Police say her son appeared to have suffocated, but the official cause of death for the two has not yet been determined. An autopsy was performed on the woman Sunday, and on her son Monday morning.
Police say they are waiting to talk with the medical examiner before they release any more information, but that the family is devastated and does not want to be contacted.
"It's a tragic loss," said Frenger. "Losing both their daughter and their grandson."
