Folk Festival Looks to Catch Up with Donations on Final Day
Ron and Carol Mott of Okemos have been coming to the Great Lakes Folk Festival for years, but like many this year, they did not make it out until Sunday. "We just walked in," said Ron Mott. "Didn't come yesterday because they had a lot of rain." That poses a problem for a festival that relies entirely on grants and donations to keep going every year. "You just have to be honest and say that Friday wasn't a wonderful kickoff," said Gary Morgan, three-time Folk Festival worker. At noon, Sunday, Morgan says, donations were only half of what organizers were hoping for from the weekend. "We like to get up over the 20,000 dollar mark," said Morgan. At the final day of the festival, volunteers came out in full force with buckets, hoping to catch up with donations. Organizers say the Great Lakes Folk Festival typically brings in 70,000 to 80,000 people annually, and costs roughly $600,000 to put on.
