Jackson Neighborhood Fights Rain, Holds Reunion

Residents of the Southside neighborhood in Jackson braved the weather, Saturday, as they set up their tents on the grounds of the Martin Luther King Jr. center.
"It's always nice to come back and see friends I grew up with," said Michael Parker, a former neighborhood resident who now lives in England. "It's good to come back and see how Jackson has changed and it has changed a lot."
Jackson Councilman, Carl L. Breeding, has been Chairperson for the reunion since 2005 and has seen the event grow to more than 1,500 people in past years.
"The thought of seeing someone you haven't seen, or someone you went to school with and haven't seen them for 10 years, that's success in itself," said Breeding.
Breeding also says the reunion can be used as a way to prevent violence in city neighborhoods.
"With crime, we have to start when they're young and show them how to love their neighbors, that's what we do here," said Breeding.
The Southside Reunion happens every two years and began, in its current form, in 1996.
