One of the closest races that played out into early Wednesday morning was the Democratic primary for the 69th State House race.

Former East Lansing Mayor Sam Singh defeated Susan Schmidt 52 to 47 percent. Schmidt was current 69th District State Representative Mark Meadows' chief of staff.

Singh got 4,714 votes, while Schmidt received 4,206 votes.

"Well, I had a wonderful team," Singh said. "Volunteers and staff that really pulled together a great campaign, and it's one of those things when people come to you to volunteer for you, it means a lot."

Singh will face off against republican Susan McGillicuddy in November. She received 64 percent of the vote, beating out her opponents Frank Lambert and George Nastas III.

"I thought the opponent would end up being Sam Singh that I would be running against him, and I have a very different philosophy than he does," McGillicuddy said. "So, voters will have a clear choice come November."
