Friends Watch Wieber Win Gold Live in Theater
No one needed 3-D glasses to stay riveted Tuesday at NCG Theater in Eastwood Towne Center.
Nearly 300 of Jordyn Wieber's friends and teammates came together for a viewing party on the big screen. Twistars held a shortened practice so they could watch Wieber compete live in London.
"I was like getting the chills when she was up there," said Nicole Eastman, Wieber's Twistars teammate and close friend. "I was like gripping my arm because I was so nervous for her, but in the end I was so happy and so proud."
The theater wouldn't allow us to film the screen because of the live feed, but the reactions to the performances spoke for themselves, especially for Jordyn who will miss out on the individual gold.
Her hometown teammates said they were confident going into Tuesday's competition that she'd take home the gold.
"I'm sure she wanted to like prove a point, and that's what she did," Eastman said. "She got the job done."
Even though the screams and cheers might have been the loudest for Jordyn, everyone said this is really about the whole team.
"Team Gold was ultimately the main goal going anyways," said Brett Wargo, a Twistars coach. "Team Gold was more important than any individual event or any individual all around could have been no matter what."
Jordyn's teammates recognize that as well.
"We all know how hard she worked and how much she deserves it, but in the end, it is about our country, it is about USA, so everyone was just really excited and she's really excited obviously," Eastman said. "So, we're just supporting her and USA."
Now young gymnasts already hope to follow in Jordyn's footsteps.
"She inspires me a lot," said Sydnee Belcher, a Twistars Gymnast. "I want to be an Olympian one day."
This is the first gold medal for the American gymnastics team since the "Magnificent Seven" in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
