Lansing Fire Department to Get New Equipment

The Lansing Fire Department, like many others in the city and state, has operated on a tighter budget.
“The purchase of new equipment has been cut back obviously and then some of the replacement schedule for some of our old equipment has been prolonged a little bit longer than what we’d like,” said Lansing Fire Marshal Brad Drury.
That’s why the department looked to other sources. They applied for and received a federal grant worth about $289,000, to be used for purchasing replacement equipment like gas monitors, heavy rescue gear and stretchers.
“The grant really allows us to try and stay ahead of the curve on replacing or getting the most current stuff that’s out there for us,” said Drury.
To get the grant, the city is required to match 20% of the total. It’s something Councilmember A’Lynne Robinson considers fiscally responsible.
“To maximize our city dollars is to have those other dollars come alongside and work in cooperation with monies that we are able to match with,” Robinson said.
The money is also earmarked to buy new items the department doesn’t currently have, including Mobile Data Terminals.
“That will give new information and any current information to the firefighters while they are en route or if there’s anything that they need to know specifically about that location that we might have information on, they’ll be able to pull that up on the scene,” Drury said.
