Teacher Pleads Guilty to Having Sex with Student
JACKSON - A former school teacher in Jackson County pleads guilty to having a sexual relationship with one of his students. On Tuesday, Matthew Lusby pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. A second similar charge was dropped.
The charge carries the potential of a life sentence, but since Lusby has no prior criminal history, the prosecutor's office says it is unlikely he'll face that severe a penalty.
The judge told Lusby he will receive at least the 5-year minimum sentence.
Lusby, 28, was a teacher at the daVinci Institute in Jackson County's Summit Township. His 15-year old female victim was a student.
The guilty plea means the teenage victim will not have to testify or face Lusby again.
Jackson County Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski tells FOX 47, "Any time you get a plea to a life offense it is a victory." The prosecutor says she "has high hopes this resolution will bring closure for the victim."
Sentencing is scheduled for August 22nd.
