'Ugly Dogs' Invade Williamston for a Good Cause
Williamston will be hosting an “Ugly Dog” Contest, Friday, August 3, during Dog Days in Downtown Williamston. All dogs are welcome to participate if they interact well with people and other dogs. The dogs will be judged on the following categories: best trick, least behaved, best dressed/costume, looks most like owner, longest tail, friendliest, shortest, tallest, longest ears and . . . ugliest!
Cost is $5 for the first entered category and $1 for each additional category entered. Proceeds donated to Paws with a Cause. Registration starts at 5 pm, with judging from 6-7 pm, behind Gracie’s Place, 151 S. Putnam in downtown Williamston. Dog pools/drinking water will be available for your pets. At 7:05 pm the dogs will parade from Gracie’s Place to McCormick Park.
This contest is organized by the Delta Rho Chapter of Epsilon Sigma International (ESA) Sorority. ESA is a non-profit philanthropic sorority that raises money for such causes as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Easter Seals, Paws with a Cause and various other organizations as well as local charities in the Williamston area. This event is being held during the Dog Days of Williamston, a Williamston Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored event.
The proceeds from the Ugly Dog Contest are donated to Paws with a Cause organization. This organization provides service and hearing dogs to the physically disabled without charge, bringing meaning and independence to some the millions of people with disabilities across the nations. Paws with a Cause is a nonprofit organization that identifies and develops ways to establish mutually beneficial working relationships between people with disabilities and dogs. Service dogs are trained to open doors; turn on/off lights, pick up dropped objects, aid in getting up from a fall, transfer items to/from a counter and aid in dressing/undressing. Hearing dogs are trained to respond to fire alarms; smoke detectors, baby monitors, baby cries, intruders and door bells.
