Update: Woman Dies After Being Shot By Suicidal Husband
A woman in Summit Township has died after being shot by her husband.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says Mary Matteson, 87, was shot in the head by Paul Matteson, 88, on Tuesday before he pulled the gun on himself.
Mary Matteson was a patient at RidgeCrest Health Campus in Summit Township, recovering from a recent surgery.
The sheriff's office says Paul Matteson shot her in her room at RidgeCrest with a handgun.
The wife had been taken to the hospital in critical condition Tuesday afternoon and died later.
The sheriff's office says Paul Matteson left no note or any other explanation for his actions.
An 89-year-old man walked into a Summit Township assisted living facility Tuesday afternoon and shot his 87-year-old wife who had been staying there.
The man then turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
The woman survived her wound and is in critical condition at Allegiance Health in Jackson.
The shooting occurred at about 2 p.m. at the Ridge Crest Health Center in the 700 block of Robinson Road.
The names of the couple have not been released. The investigation is continuing.
