Verlander to start for American League

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander has been named the starting pitcher for tonight’s All-Star game. 

The reigning American League CY Young and MVP has a 9-5 record and a 2.58 ERA.  Verlander leads the league in strikeouts with 128.

This will be Verlander’s first All-Star game start and his fifth appearance.  The National League roster is a combined 6-42 against Verlander.

The NL will counter with San Francisco Giants starter, Matt Cain, who threw the first perfect game in Giants history this year.  Cain is  9-3 with a 2.62 ERA.

Former manager Tony La Russa of the champion St. Louis Cardinals will be managing the NL, while Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers will manage the AL

The Tigers will also be represented by Home Run Derby champion Prince Fielder starting at first base and Miguel Cabrera as a back up third basemen.  The All-Star game starts tonight in Kansas City at 7:30 pm on FOX.
