Update: Lansing Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of Teen
Lansing police are hoping an autopsy performed Monday on 16-year-old Levon Wilson, the victim of a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning, will offer some clues into his death. Friends and family mourn the teen and say the neighborhood won't be the s Video by fox47news.comvideo
The area young residents called a safe haven, near Jenison and Maple Streets, is now the scene of a fatal shooting investigation.
"I'm kinda surprised it happened right here, it's usually a safe haven," said Jordan Guinn, a close friend of Levon Wilson. "Usually, if you're not a trouble maker, you're right here."
Friends and police say 16-year-old Levon Wilson was not a trouble maker, but around 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning he was shot and killed during a drive-by shooting outside a home in the 1000-block of Jenison after a party.
"He was a real happy kid," Guinn said. "I never seen him frown. He was too nice to really have any kind of problem with anybody. Like I don't know why anybody would want to hurt him, that's why I say he was an innocent bystander."
Wilson spent Fourth of July with Guinn and often visited his home, next door to the house where the shooting occurred.
The homeowner couldn't be reached for comment, but police say he's an important part of this investigation.
"He is cooperating," said Lansing Police Captain Mike Yankowski. "He'll be a part of the investigation to figure out what went wrong, and why was there a large group of people there at 3:00 in the morning. So, we'll add that to the investigation, and if anything develops from that, we'll make sure the appropriate action is taken."
Police say they still need party goers to step forward. Descriptions of the SUV used by the shooter or shooters have varied.
"We ask the public, any witnesses that might have been there to contact us so we can get all the information," Yankowski said. "The information might not seem important to somebody at this point in time, but it could mean the difference in the case to us."
It would also mean the world to Wilson's friends and family.
"I send my prayers out to his family and friends and things like that," Guinn said. "I just hope that justice can be done."
The results of Wilson's autopsy are not available yet.
A 24-year-old male was also shot Sunday, and sustained non-life threatening injuries.
