Bill Richey is the Director of the National Mounted Police Services and has helped train mounted police units across the country. He was at the Eaton County Fairgrounds in Charlotte, Saturday, training both the Eaton County Mounted Division and some out-of-state mounted divisions in anti-terrorism methods, the first program of its kind in the country.

"We decided to look into anti-terrorist training and among the anti-terrorist training we looked into homeland security money," said Richey. "We wrote a specific agenda for this training and homeland security approved it."

The mounted deputies practiced a number of formations and techniques with their horses that would help them move through and separate large crowds in case of an emergency.

Eaton County Sheriff, Mike Raines, said he liked the idea of the program because not only does it put Eaton County on the map, but also helps train the mounted unit for high-pressure situations.

"They're being trained for terrorism, but they can also use all that training for events and anything they are called out for," said Raines.

According to Sheriff Raines, the Eaton County Mounted Division has been around since 1972 and is made up entirely of volunteers who have been trained as deputies.
