A police chase ended, Monday, when a car crossed over the center line of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and smashed into a number of other vehicles, sending five people to the hospital and closing the road between Cavanaugh and Holmes for several hours.

"I just heard what sounded like a high-speed chase, so I looked out the window and at the same time I just hear a big 'boom'," said Ahmad Taylor, who witnessed the accident.

According to police, the car that caused the accident had been linked to a robber in the 3200 block of Washington Avenue. At approximately 11:48 a.m., police received a call that three men had robbed an apartment building, firing shots from two different guns before leaving.

"An officer spotted the car and tried to initiate a stop and they did not stop," said Robert Merritt, Public Information Officer for Lansing Police. "A pursuit was started and quickly terminated, but the purple car crossed over the center line and came into contact with several other cars."

All three suspects in the car were arrested and police found two weapons in the car when it was searched.

"Two handguns were recovered at the scene," said Merritt.

A police officer also received minor hand injuries during a foot pursuit of one of the suspects. Michigan State Police barricaded the road for around three hours while they continued to search the suspect vehicle.

Just before noon, Monday, Lansing police began chasing the car with two suspects inside following a report of shots being fired in the 3200 block of south Washington.

An eyewitness tells FOX 47 that the car swerved into oncoming traffic and hit an SUV. At least two other cars were hit on MLK at Le Grand just north of Cavanaugh Street.

Northbound and southbound lanes of MLK are now closed between Holmes and Cavanaugh until further notice.

Police say there doesn't appear to be anyone injured in the area where the shots were reported.
