Living Christmas Tree Company a Green Alternative
Going out and cutting a live tree for Christmas is still a big tradition. But there could be a better way to get a tree. There's a new, earth-friendly service in California that uses and re-uses live Christmas trees.
Scott Martin for most of the year is a landscape architect. But right now, through Christmas, he is "Scotty Claus" and with his elves brings a little extra life to the holidays with his living Christmas trees.
"Having something alive in the corner of the room room is a whole different experience than having something that's slowly dead, or plastic, and not giving back to the room at all," said Martin.
Scott has been working in and around nurseries since he was a teenager. He actually used to deliver cut trees.
"Everybody's happy to see you. Egg nog, tips, the whole bit. But the contrast to that was what would happen afterwards. You're driving around and that same tree you struggled to get to the second floor and it was perfect is now laying by the curb."
And now, and actually for the past three years, his Living Christmas Company has been growing.
Now this is a distribution center. You can't actually come here to pick out your tree. Most people go online to livingchristmas.com and pick out the variety and height they want. And in 48 hours, the tree will be delivered.
The company picks up the tree after the holidays, and if all goes well during the year, you can get your same tree back next Christmas.
"To a kid, this makes sense. The other practice doesn't make sense. You used to cut down a tree and bring it into your house? That's what mom and dad used to do? That's what grandpa used to do? That doesn't make any sense to me."
For the Pittman-Gibbons family, a beloved Charlie Brown tree is the only Christmas tree Phinius and Beckette have ever known.
"He decorated the bottom of the tree here, so all the little ornaments are on the same branches and stuff. But he wasn't able to do it last year."
Jennifer was actually looking for a green alternative when a friend posted the Living Christmas site on Facebook, and a new earth-friendly family tradition was born.
