The driver of a burgundy Malibu was going so fast on Sorrento that when he crashed, the vehicle actually bent around a tree it hit.

Three men were in the car. One was killed and two others rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Detroit Police say the men in the Malibu had been traveling north on Sorrento at a high rate of speed Tuesday afternoon when the crash happened.

Witnesses say a woman who was driving south on Sorrento tried to pull to the side of the street to give way to the car speeding in the opposite direction, but her car was clipped.

The driver of the Malibu lost control. The vehicle flipped and slammed into the tree so hard that it wrapped around it.

People living nearby say they heard that the Malibu's driver had been racing another car on another street, but Detroit Police say they do not have any evidence that racing was involved.

Detroit Police Fatal Squad is investigating.
