The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has identified a man who died as the result of an officer-involved shooting on Sunday June 26, 2016.

Undersheriff Christopher Kuhl reports that officers from Columbia Township and Napoleon Township responded to a domestic assault report in the 8000 block of Clark Lake Road in Columbia Township shortly before 11:00 a.m. When officers arrived, several people were at the residence.

Police say officers were confronted by a man armed with a baseball bat outside the home. Witnesses reported that police officers gave several loud warnings to drop the bat, but the man refused, and continued moving toward the officers and threatening them. A Columbia Township police officer then shot the suspect. The suspect has been identified as Terry Lynn Maurer, a 51-year-old man from Lenawee County.

The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff was called in to help investigate the incident. Detectives from the department, along with investigators from the Michigan State Police and City of Jackson Police are conducting the investigation.

The Columbia Township officer involved in the shooting has been identified as 33-year-old Officer Joe Lalli.

Officer Lalli has been a police officer for nine years, and has been part of the Columbia Township department for two years.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department will continue to investigate the case over the next several days. When their investigation is complete, a report will be forwarded to Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka to review.
