Parents are concerned about a proposed transgender policy in their schools.

FOX 47 News was at the Williamston school board meeting Monday night where things got heated.

Parents seem to have two major concerns with the transgender policy as it stands now, one of the major ones is bullying.

The school board wants to appease both sides by not specifically singling out transgender students when it comes to bullying as it can be an issue for all students.

Some parents are happy with the school boards staunch approach to anti-bullying.

"The AP Policy or the recommendations to educators, says that policies like the one you're discussing are extremely necessary in order to stop the epidemic of suicide among transgender youth," said one parent.

Another issue discussed was the privacy portion of the draft. Parents were concerned because the school isn't required to tell them which students are transgender-- even if it's their own child.

"As a father, I have a lifetime moral responsibility to raise my children, teach them the truth, and keep them safe," said one man. "Until they're 18 I have a legal responsibility."

The school board says they made pretty big cuts to the original draft... And that they're pleased with the newest one.

The district plans to vote on the proposal on November 6.
