LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) More businesses and apartment units are going up in Lansing.

Mayor Virg Bernero and the Lansing Economic Area Partnership announced the Provident Place project Friday. The 4-story building will have 33 residential units, 9,500 square feet of commercial and retail space, and a new parking structure. It will be built on vacant property on Michigan Avenue just west of US-127. The project is expected to cost $7 million and create new construction jobs.

Developer Scott Gillespie said, "The vision of the project came through previous projects, in working with the community to design a project that fits with the character of what the community wants, the design that the community wants in the uses that the community wants. If we can bring more business we can bring more housing options, and part of that is cleaning up some of the blighted buildings and some of the things that we don't wanna see."

The CEO of LEAP says the Provident Place project will boost economic activity along Michigan Avenue. It's due to be finished by fall of next year.
