The Mayor of Lansing announced today a relief effort to help hurricane-damaged Puerto Rico. Mayor Virg Bernero announced that the City of Lansing will be joining forces with the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission to raise money for Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Relief.
“The devastation and suffering in Puerto Rico calls for a strong, united and compassionate response,” Mayor Bernero said. “I am proud to support the relief effort for Puerto Rico, which is one of our own.” Puerto Rico is currently an unincorporated territory of the United States.
All funds raised will be directed to the National Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has used donations to send satellite phones, food, medicine, generators, even doctors to the area.
100% of the money collected will go to helping the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. As of today, reports say that still only 45% of Puerto Rican citizens have access to drinking water and only 5% have electricity. Fifty percent of the roads are still not passable and there are only 14% of cell towers that work.
