IONIA, Mich. (WSYM) - After 30 years of service, a local teacher is retiring but not without a proper farewell from the community.

Rose Scheller is a vocal music teacher at Ionia Public Schools.

On Saturday, both current and former students gathered inside the middle school auditorium for a big surprise and to remember a teacher they say has made a tremendous impact in the lives of many students.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley stopped by, reflecting on his time in Scheller's class along with presenting a tribute from the State of Michigan.

“I've had a lot of different levels of education,” said Calley. “I can say that the most impactful education I’ve ever had was Rose Scheller.”

Current and former students then gathered on stage to all perform together.

Scheller shared with FOX 47 News her message to other teachers in the community.

“Love your kids, love every minute of their ups and love every minute of their downs,” said Scheller. “Just listen to them and let them know that they can be anything that they want to be and you can do that through music.”

June 9th will be Scheller's last day at Ionia Public Schools.
