Coleman Young Jr., son of former Detroit mayor Coleman Young, announced Sunday afternoon he plans to follow his father's footsteps.
Young, a current state senator, made the announcement on WHPR radio.
His father, the first African American mayor of Detroit, served from 1973 to 1993.
Young will likely challenge incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan, who announced his re-election bid earlier this month.
The mayoral primary is in August.
