A little boy fighting cancer gets to be a police chief for a day.
Seven-year-old Rodney Burton loves everything about law enforcement, so Detroit Police Chief James Craig decided to hand him his badge and let him be "Chief for the Day."
He arrived to his first day on the job in a helicopter.
"It was fun, I got nothing to say it was fun," Rodney said.
Sometimes he's at a loss for words, but Rodney enjoyed the moment, especially after everything he's been through.
Rodney has been battling sickle cell disease since he was a baby and just last year, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"He is able to wake up everyday with a smile on his face no matter what pain he may be in, no matter what he may go through and he always give thanks to God, no matter what," said Johnai Evans, Rodney's mother.
Rodney was dressed for the part from head to toe.
He was welcome to police headquarters by several officers and state troopers.
And inside, he was saluted and cheered
Rodney has always had a love for law enforcement and Chief Craig decided to share the limelight with Rodney.
"I want the city to be protected," Rodney said.
"We really enjoy doing this kind of work in our community. It really defines our work as police department," Chief Craig added.
He got a chance to experience a press conference and was asked, what to say when you arrest someone.
Rodney answered, "I make them put their hands behind their back, put handcuffs on and say you have the right to remain silent.
Chief Craig explained that Rodney handled the reporters well.
"He probably handled it better than I did. He just told me one thing, be nice," he said.
