Tips When Leaving Your Home for Break

CREATED Dec. 18, 2011

Michigan State University students are officially on winter break, many of them going home.  Which can be seen as an invitation for thieves to come looking for empty apartments and homes.  Last year, there were 26 reports of thefts in East Lansing during MSU's break.

Here is a couple of tips from East Lansing police -- if you're leaving town, make sure all of your windows and doors are locked.  Also, put your mail on hold at the post office so you don't tip off potential thieves no ones home.  And make sure someone shovels your sidewalks because even if you're out of town, you will still be fined under the city's snow-removal ordinance.
