You're not the only one at risk for influenza -- your household pets can also get sick.

Dr. Manny Alvarez has tips on how to keep your pet from catching the flu. Believe it or not, your pet can get the flu -- just like you can -- and it turns out it is pretty common.

One recent study in Ohio found that 30 percent of cats had been infected with the virus. The symptoms are the same as the ones we face, like breathing problems, a runny nose, and fatigue.

Often times pets catch the flu from their owners.

Here's how you can protect them:

  • Get a flu shot.
  • Wash your hands before handling them or their food.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • Make sure your pet's vaccines are up to date.

Pets can also get viruses from other animals, so keep an eye on your best friend's "friends" too.
