MLK “Get a Poke, Give a Pint!” Community Blood Drive

  • Print

Donors will be a part of a blood drive hosted by NorthWest Initiative and Michigan Blood that aims to raise awareness of the lack of diversity in the blood supply, joining hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service. NorthWest Initiative has planned a day of service that will leverage the strength of local citizens to help tackle local problems and advance King’s dream of opportunity for all. Currently, there are 80,000 people in the United States suffering from sickle cell disease, 98% whom are of African descent. Adverse reactions are less likely to occur during much-needed blood transfusions if the donor is the same ethnicity as the patient, making it imperative that the blood supply reflects our diverse community. As less than 2% of African Americans donate blood, there is a severe lack of adequate matches for many sickle cell patients needing transfusions. If you would like to be a donor, please contact Tali Snyder to sign up for an appointment time. You may reach her by phone or email, 517-999-2894 or
