MPHI Announces Healthy Food Drive for the Greater Lansing Food Bank Okemos, Michigan: The Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI) will host a healthy food drive to benefit the Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB). The food drive will begin Monday, March 18, and run through Wednesday, March 27, 2013. The Greater Lansing Food Bank is a non-profit organization that provides emergency food to individuals and families in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Shiawassee, Clare, Isabella, and Gratiot counties. Food is distributed through an extensive network of over 150 pantries and related agencies, serving approximately 60,000 people. Recipients include seniors, children, and the working poor. It has been reported that 24% of the clients have to choose between buying food and paying utilities, and 32% have to choose between buying food or medicine. As part of our mission, MPHI is dedicated to maximizing positive health conditions in our community. Please look for healthier items such as those lower in sodium, sugar, and 0 Trans fat, as well as items high in protein and fiber. “As our community heads into spring break, we want to do our part to keep the shelves stocked at the local food pantries and agencies providing assistance to our community residents,” said Dr. Jeffrey R. Taylor, MPHI Chief Executive Officer. Items needed: Canned/dry beans, canned salmon, tuna, canned chicken, canned fruits and vegetables, olive, canola, and vegetable oil, dry pasta, macaroni and cheese, complete boxed meals spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, rice, instant potatoes, soup, snack items, baby food, baby cereal, coffee, tea, fruit juice, cereal, flour, sugar, spices, etc. Only non-perishable items can be accepted. Community members are encouraged to participate in this event by brining non-perishable items to MPHI offices at 2436 Woodlake Circle, Suite 300, Okemos, MI 48864. Donations will be accepted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 18 through Wednesday, March 27.
