Happy Popcorn Lover's Day!
Naturally Gluten-Free and an All-American Favorite
Happy Popcorn Lover's Day! If you are craving something crunchy, salty and, or sweet--you're in luck! Annually, the second Thursday in March is "Popcorn Lover's Day" a food holiday created by fellow popcorn-lover Bob Matthews.
I LOVE popcorn. Actually, I am addicted to popcorn. I eat it almost everyday. Why? Popcorn not only tastes amazing, but contains fiber and is low in fat and calories and it's naturally gluten-free! Did you know that air-popped popcorn only has 31 calories per cup? Perfect for snacks, parties or movie night, you can't go wrong with a freshly popped bowl! My advice is to make your own and to stay away from microwave popcorn--save yourself from the unnecessary calories and chemicals included in those bags. Pop your own kernels by following my recipe here. Dress up your popcorn with butter, drizzle with cheese or caramel or chocolate, add in some dark chocolate m&ms (a personal favorite), sprinkle it with some sea salt or eat it with plain!
In honor of Popcorn Lover's Day, try out one of the poppin' recipes listed here. And check out my favorite popcorn essentials:
1. Orville Redenbacher's White Kernels: Plain kernels that can be used in an air-popper or in a pot on the stove. When I want "traditional" movie popcorn, I snag this off the shelf because the hull is bigger, when the kernel is popped, the pieces are larger, giving you that movie theater-esque crunch.
2. The Original Whirleypop: This is hands-down the best invention ever made. If you like popcorn, you will fall in love with the Whirleypop. Suitable for any stove top, simply add oil, kernels and give them a whirl with by turning the handle. It is crazy easy and makes perfectly popped popcorn every time! (I have gifted this to fellow popcorn lovers and they can't get enough of it. Buy it from Bed Bath & Beyond and use their 20% coupon to score a great deal!)
3. Black Jewel Popcorn: My ultimate favorite! This popcorn almost has a nutty flavor to it. It has a tiny hull, so it produces smaller popcorn pieces. I can't say enough about this product. Buy it, try it and be amazed.
4/5. Skinny Pop and Boom Chicka Pop: When I am in a popcorn pinch or traveling, I will pick up one of these two bags. You can snag these off the shelf at your local grocery store, and they tend to be healthier than the microwave kind.
