'Tis the Season... already?
According to most of our local craft/department/grocery stores even, the holidays have been around the corner for quite some time.
But for many, the countdown to snow, holiday cheer, scarves and sweets and all that is inbetween isn't really official until Starbucks unveils its famous Red Cups for the season.
Imagine my surprise when I ordered a pumpkin spice latte this morning and was handed a bold red cup featuring a geometric guy and his dog riding on a sled together. The tagline: Let's Rediscover Why We're Best Friends.
Now, Starbucks could be referring to the guy and his dog, but I'm sure they're also talking about people's relationship with Starbucks itself. There's something reliably wonderful about the Red Cups. It's a taste of what's to come for the holiday season, warm and inviting.
I also couldn't help but notice the "Red" in "Rediscover", but maybe that's my wordy word search mind going on overload. It's just a coincidence, right?
In a search online I found a website that was actually counting down the days until the Red Cups were to appear, but for some reason, it looked as though the Red Cups weren't due until November 3rd. Did my little drive-thru Starbucks in East Lansing let the cat out of the bag early?
It would have been nice to have a little more space between Halloween and the onset of the Red Cups. Our pumpkins are still on the porch and haven't even begun to distort or grow mushy. I still have cotton cobwebs woven into in bushes out front.
Wicker pumpkins, ceramic pumpkins, plastic pumpkins are still scattered around the inside of our house.
Yet my pumpkin spice latte in my Red Cup has made me realize that the winter is in fact coming, that Halloween is in fact over, and I just need to embrace it.
But, there's no way I'm going to let pumpkin-flavored items go without a fight. Along with honeycrisp apples, light scarves and the cool, clean air, pumpkin is one fall favorite that I will savor as long as I can.
So take that, Starbucks.
