Workout to Try: Pure Barre in Okemos, MI

  • Print

I have been wanting to try this new class for a really, really long time, but it wasn't until they recently offered a Groupon that I said "YES".  I purchased my Groupon and found out one of my Zumba students Allison, (also a friend) had purchased the deal too, so we decided to go together.

And I'm hookedWe're hooked.

As a fitness instructor for over 10 years and a Zumba Instructor for the last 5 years, I felt like I was in pretty good shape.  "Pretty good" being the relative term.  I walked into the Okemos studio on a hot day in late June and was greeted warmly by a young woman named Melanie who made me feel at ease right away.  I told her I was a first-timer and she walked me through every step.  I was then introduced to my instructor for that class, Katelyn.  She was extremely nice and showed me where I needed to go and what equipment I needed for the class.  She made me feel welcome and comfortable.

I grabbed a set of 2lb and 3lb dumbbells, resistance band, and a Pilates mini ball.  The lights dimmed and the music started.  And so did my sweat!   Not 10 minutes into class my muscles were trembling!  I looked at Allison, and was like "what did we get ourselves into!"

The philosophy behind Pure Barre is to work each muscle group to complete and udder exhaustion, and then stretch.  Using small isometric movements, you lift, tone and burn.  (I can attest to that).

I thought I had a strong core....until I tried Barre. The class is set to current, popular music and a great beat.  With the lights turned low and the heat and music turned up, the ambiance and energy was seeping through my pores and revving up my heart rate in no time.  We did a series of core, arm, shoulder, glut and leg exercises that had my muscles quivering.  I even had to stop a couple of times during a set!  Katelyn was a great instructor and even followed up with Allison and I after class to see how we liked it and encourage us even more.

After that I've been to class 3 more times in the last week. I also purchased a month of unlimited classes to start after my Groupon.

The reason I'm so hooked on Pure Barre is the fact that it is NON-impact.  Teaching 6-7 Zumba classes per week, my body takes a beating...and I'm beginning to feel it in my knees.  Pure Barre gives me a different type of workout with NO impact at all, so my joints can take a break.  Any age can take this class, there was even a pregnant woman in my last class.

So, if you are looking for a challenge, and looking to lift, tone and burn (who isn't), try out a class.  You won't be disappointed.
